Pay it Forward: Giving abilities for those with disabilities

Paying it Forward

One group  has been helping out a group of Ouachita Parish students for more than 20 years.

People born with disabilities already face an uphill battle, and being a student doesn’t make it any easier.

The Twin City Mayor’s Committee has been awarding scholarships to students with disabilities in Ouachita Parish for more than 20 years, and this upcoming year will be their biggest yet.

“We’re extremely excited we’ve gotten superb support from Mayor Mayo and Mayor Norris over the years we’ve distributed about a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships,” says Henry Bateman, Twin City Mayor’s Committee.

Not only has the committee helped dozens of students since forming, but they have been working to improve the quality of life for everyone with disabilities in Ouachita Parish.

“We coordinate with the cities and help develop policies that might help people with disabilities. We meet with the mayors about once a year and talk to them about things that are of interest and importance to people with disabilities,” says Bateman.

This year 10 students will be awarded 15 thousand dollars to help further their education.
