Paying it Foward to PAWS of NELA

Pay it Forward

Wagging tails and playful barks are signs of excited pups having a doggone good time at the Humane Society Adoption Center in Monroe, the location for this month’s Pay It Forward.

Renee Dowhaniuk was on hand to accept a $500 donation for PAWS of NELA, made possible by Hixon Ford, the Hixon Family, Hogan Insurance and Twin City Outdoor.

“Paws is a local animal welfare group and we’ve been around since 2003,” says Dowhaniuk. “Our primary focus is to reduce pet populations in the area and taking dogs that may otherwise have a hard time getting adopted and putting them into our rescue program”

She says the money will be extremely helpful with the group’s mission.

“Well our vet bills are very, very high because if we have a heart worm positive dog it can run up to $1,000 to care for that dog before we can allow it to be adopted.Everybody has to be spayed and neutered and there is a cost associated to that. So it will go definitely to the care of the dogs, ” says Dowhaniuk.

Making this donation even more timely is Hurricane Harvey.

Dowhaniuk says that getting the current dogs adopted out will make room for animals from surrounding areas that were displaced in last months historic floods.

Coordinating it all is no easy task, but it’s a job that’s full of rewards!

“I look at PAWS as one of those organizations in town that are just so deserving and I’m really proud to be part of it,” says Dowhaniuk.
