CALDWELL PARISH, La. (KTVE/KARD) — The Louisiana State Fire Marshal has released new details about the fire that claimed the life of a Columbia man.

According to the Fire Marshal, the Hebert Fire Department was called out on Thursday, January 13, 2022, around 10:00 p.m. to a house fire in the 1600 Block of Highway 848 in Columbia. According to firefighters they found a man in a wheelchair in the doorway of a bedroom during their attempts to put out the fire.

Firefighters say they do not have an official identification or an official cause of death, but the victim is believed to be the 63-year-old, disabled homeowner.

The initial investigation, according to firefighters, shows the fire could have started in the sunroom and/or the laundry room area of the home. The fire investigators say the official cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they have evidence that will not allow them to rule out the possibility of an electrical malfunction of some type of heating-related contributing factor due to a fire place in the area believed to be where the fire started.
