Richard Matt, One of Two Escaped Inmates, Shot Dead by Officer

News
MALONE, NY — Richard Matt, one of the two killers who escaped from an upstate New York prison three weeks ago, was shot and killed by a law enforcement officer Friday, police and sources said.

Authorities were still searching for the other escaped inmate, David Sweat, New York State Police said in a statement.

The two inmates were likely traveling together when a Border Patrol tactical team encountered Matt and started shooting when he apparently raised and pointed a shotgun at them, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC News.

A law enforcement officer spotted Matt in a wooded area in the town of Malone at around 3:45 p.m., police said. The team was conducting a sweep in the area when they heard shots and closed in on Matt, law enforcement sources said.

State police said they believe Matt was killed, but a formal identification is pending. Law enforcement sources told NBC News that Matt is dead.

Video shot by a bystander captured a swarm of law enforcement vehicles, and an officer could be heard saying, “We have one guy down.”
