UPDATE: Shooting death on Flynn St. caused by drug deal gone bad

UPDATE: MONROE, La. — (7/18/19) A drug deal gone bad is to blame for the death of one man in Monroe.

According to arrest reports, Monroe Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of Flynn Street after the body of 36-year-old James Mercer was found in the backyard. Detectives say the victim was shot in the head and had lacerations on the back of the head.

A witness claims to have heard several gunshots in the area and shortly after saw 29-year-old Rodrigues Bynum walking with a handgun.

During a police interview, Bynum stated that he and Mercer had got into an argument over a drug deal when they began to fight. Bynum told police that he struck Mercer in the head several times. He also admitted to shooting in the direction of the victim but claims he did not know the bullet actually hit Mercer.

Bynum told officers that he burned the clothes he was wearing during the shooting and tossed the gun in a canal ditch.

Bynum is charged with Criminal Conspiracy, 2 counts of Distribution of Crack Cocaine, and Second Degree Murder. His bond is set at $22,500 but is expected to go up once he sees a judge.


Update: MONROE, La. — (7/17/19) Monroe Police Detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death on Flynn Street.

Detectives arrested 29-year-old Rodrigues Bynum for the shooting death of 36-year-old James Mercer that occurred in the 1900 block of Flynn Street.

Authorities said it is believed that the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Bynum was charged with 2nd Degree Murder. His bond has not been set yet.

Detectives are unable to release any other information at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
