JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The state auditor says a former city court clerk is accused of taking nearly $67,000 that people submitted to pay fines in Houston, Mississippi.
A spokesman for Auditor Shad White said Monday that Kathy Smith is accused of taking cash and money orders that people paid from 2013 to 2018.
Smith turned herself in for arrest Friday at the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department after she was indicted on embezzlement.
A judge set bond at $25,000. A demand letter from the auditor said Smith is accused of embezzling $66,830.
The auditor issued a demanding letter seeking that amount, plus $36,445 in interest and $28,423 in recovery costs.
