“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our beloved hippopotamus, Penelope,” said Director of the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo Joe Clawson.

The hippo has been at the local zoo since 1988. The life expectancy of a hippo in capitivity is 40 years old. Penelope was almost 32 years old.

Clawson said Penelope died in her sleep Friday. The autopsy results reveal she died from a heart condition.
