Woman accused in purse snatching incident arrested

(1/30/19) A West Monroe woman has been arrested after police say she was caught on surveillance stealing a woman’s wallet from her purse at a local Walmart.

Whitney Wiley, 37 of West Monroe, was arrested on January 29, 2018.

According to the arrest report, on January 28, 2019, West Monroe Police received a felony theft call for service at the Walmart located at 1025 Glenwood Drive in West Monroe.

Once officers arrived, they learned an unknown female suspect with short blonde and pink hair followed the victim throughout the store and ultimately stole the victim’s wallet from her purse.

On January 29, 2019, officers followed up on this purse snatching investigation, made contact with Walmart staff and were able to view the surveillance footage of the crime.

The suspect followed the victim around the store until the victim’s attention was drawn away from her purse and shopping cart for a short time.

When the victim was inattentive, the suspect grabbed the purse, removed the wallet and fled the area on foot.

The suspect was later seen by a Walmart employee removing cash from the wallet in a separate secluded section of the business.

The wallet was recovered by Walmart staff as the suspect was walking away from that area of the store.

The suspect then later used the stolen cash from the stolen wallet to purchase multiple items at the self-checkout portion of the registers.

The suspect was then seen fleeing the store on foot by Walmart management.

The suspect was identified by
Walmart surveillance footage, previous arrest photographs, West Monroe Police Department social media and other law enforcement. The suspect, Whitney Wiley, has been a suspect in similar crimes throughout Ouachita Parish. Multiple cases where she is the sole suspect are currently pending.

On January 29, 2019, due to the help of multiple law enforcement agencies, Wiley was placed under arrest at her residence, transported to the West Monroe Correctional Center and later booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center.

The affidavit states that Wiley is a felon with a lengthy criminal history.

Wiley has been arrested for monetary instrument abuse, battery, various traffic charges, criminal trespass, various controlled dangerous substance charges, resisting arrest, battery on an officer and vagrancy.
