West Monroe residents ask for safer crossings at railroads

Local News

One child remains in the hospital from the crash involving a pickup truck and a Kansas City Southern Train in Southwestern Ouachita Parish.

The collision happened Monday, on Cheniere Baptist Church Road near Cheeks Road. Police are not revealing the names of the children because of their ages. The driver, Patricia Alford of Downsville, failed to yield.

Although multiple trains roll through the area, residents say the Cheniere Baptist Church Road crossing has been the scene of several crashes. Pastor Zack Anderson, said he would like to see crossing arms put up at the train intersection.

“It is about preventing what could have happened and keeping it from happening again. Some people think that they can beat it because those trains fly by when they come through the area,” said Anderson.

The accident had authorities urging drivers to use extreme caution when approaching railroad crossings.

KCS says the incident is under investigation however, the level of warnings at railroad crossings is determined by the state.  NBC 10 News also reached out to the Ouachita Parish Police Jury for comment, they had no comment at the time.
