In Monroe Monday, volunteers took part in the Martin Luther King Day of Service by giving back to local youth.

The United Way of Northeast Louisiana, along with employees at Thomas & Farr, put together almost 200 reading kits for local elementary students in grades  2nd and 3rd grade through their READ LEARN SUCCEED program.

Inside of the bag included a reading book, a bookmark as well as a pencil.

Earnest Finch, a volunteer with the organization tells NBC 10 News, the kits will be handed out to students next Wednesday.

The United Way is always looking for volunteers to help read to students. Learn more about Volunteer UNITED, United Way of Northeast Louisiana’s volunteer engagement center, at unitedwaynela.org/volunteer or call 2-1-1.
