UPDATE: West Monroe Community shaken up after death of 17-year-old

Local News

LATEST: (6/8/18):

Two days after shots fired people in this neighborhood are still rattled.

“When I was 13 I used to walk this road,” resident, Magan Gulledge said.

Now she won’t even let her kids play in the front yard.

“The violence the drug activity it’s not safe,” she said.

That recent activity led to the killing of 17-year-old Hannah Crenshaw, but Gulledge says the violence didn’t just start the day Crenshaw was shot.

“I know Ouachita Parish has been called out at least four times for shootings and now we have an innocent little girl who’s lost her life,” she said.

She says the shootings first started three weeks ago.

However, two hours before Hannah Crenshaw was shot those shots hit even closer to home.

“I called down to my grandmother’s house and the bullet had went through her neighbor’s house,” she said.

That neighbor was Penny Underwood.

” [A bullet] went through the other wall where we had just got through cooking,” Underwood said.

Her family was in the living room when one of the bullets tore through her house.

“It could’ve been us one of us,” she said.

Possibly more than one altercation involving the four suspects accused of Hannah Crenshaw’s murder.

In the arrest report one witness told police that Christopher Williams is the one who shot

A fight that wasn’t hers but she paid the ultimate price.

An incident that has neighbors on Keller street worried about the future.

“I don’t want nobody to hurt nobody this is just crazy,” Underwood said.

“It needs to get under control like because it’s not a safe place to be raising your kids right now,” Gulledge said.

Ouachita Parish deputies have confirmed 17-year-old Hannah Crenshaw lost her life last night. Neighbors and witness say they heard gunshots, came out to see what was happening ans saw Hannah lying on the ground. Residents on Keller Street say the violence has to stop.

Hannah was found lying lifeless on the ground in front of the house where Jay Lewis lives.

“We were in there eating supper we heard a pow pow turned all the lights off hung around in
the house for a minute my girl come in the house told us Hannah got shot,” he says.

Hannah was just about to walk into his house, which according to Jay is a normal routine for her.

“Everyday always over here visiting playing goofing off being a silly kid.”

Next thing he knows, gunshots ring out.

“She just walked up before she could turn around…she had a flashlight and when she turned around
and saw them he shot her.”

He believes Hannah was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

A teddy bear cross made from sticks lay where Jay says he saw the young girl on the ground.

He has a message he wants everyone to hear.

“Say no to violence man, it ain’t worth it little girl lost her life because of violence.”

Next door neighbor Jodi Haley says she’s seen an influx in crime in her neighborhood.

“I know there’s been a lot of tumultuous behavior going on on this street particularly next door. There’s been fighting there’s been gunshots.”

She says Hannah’s attack was hard to bare.

“They [police] wouldn’t allow anyone to walk to the fence…and her sister wanted to see her.
“She looked out and saw the shoes she knew it was her.”

Jodi says she wants the community to learn from this. That young Hannah’s life will not be lost in vain.

“I hope people learn from this…I hope this young girl’s life and death can help a movement…
can help something change because its got to change.”

Jodi says her church, Whites Ferry Road University Church, is holding a free fish fry this Sunday in hopes to bring the community together and stop the violence claiming young lives. All are welcome to attend.
