UPDATE: Monroe man charged with shooting death of teen

UPDATE (7/3/17 at 3:15 p.m.): Monroe Police have charged a suspect with the shooting death of a Monroe teen.

Devontae Coleman, 18, was arrested and has been charged with one count of 2nd degree murder in the shooting death of Junius T. Benton.

The shooting occured on June 27, 2017.

Coleman was also charged with one count of attempted murder for shooting into a crowd of bystanders in the same incident.


UPDATE (6/29/17 at 3:45 p.m.): Monroe Police have arrested a third person in Tuesday night’s fatal shooting.

Devontae Coleman (12-8-98) has been identified as the 3rd suspect shooting a gun at the scene of the murder on Long Dr.  on June 27, 2017.

Coleman is charged with Aggravated Assault with a gun and Obstruction of Justice.


UPDATE (6/28/17 at 5:00 p.m.): The Monroe Police have arrested a second person involved in last night’s fatal shooting on Miliken.

A second person has been arrested by Monroe police for their involvement in the shooting that took place on June 27, 2017 in the 1100 blk of Milliken St. 

Japhares L. Rucks was arrested on June 28, 2017 at 4:36 PM for his involvement in the altercation that led to the death of Junius Benton. 

Rucks is being charged with aggravated assault and obstruction of justice; he has been booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center.  


UPDATE (11:25 A.M): Monroe Police have released the identity of the victim in last night’s fatal shooting.

On June 27, 2017 at approximately 6:41 PM Monroe police officers were dispatched to the corner of Long and Miliken Drive in Monroe in reference to a shooting.

Upon officer’s arrival, it was discovered that sixteen year old Junius Benton had been shot once and was transported to a local hospital by some friends; Benton would later succumb to his injury.

Monroe investigators were able to locate a crime scene where the shooting took place.

Upon further investigation and speaking to witnesses it was revealed that just prior to the shooting, a verbal altercation took place between different parties. Shortly thereafter a physical altercation erupted and at some point multiple gunshots were fired; one of the shots fired would lead to Benton being fatally struck. It was determined by investigators that the altercation was involving families/friends who reside in the same neighborhood and have been feuding for a long period of time.

During this investigation several parties have been identified and contacted.

One of these individuals is seventeen year old Jaylon K Brown. Brown admitted to police about his involvement in the altercation and his firing a gun; he was arrested and is being charged with illegal discharge of a firearm.

Witnesses are cooperatively working with police as the investigation continues.

At least one person is dead after a shooting that took place on the south side of Monroe.

It happened in the 1100 block of Milliken Street around 6:41 pm Tuesday.

The victim was taken in a private vehicle to  a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead from their injuries.

The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time. 

The investigation is still ongoing and we’ll continue to follow this story as it develops.
