UPDATE: (4/8/19) The man at the center of a two hour standoff with police last week now faces multiple charges.

43-year-old Thomas Black was arrested on April 3 after police say he threatened his family with a gun and barricaded himself in his home.

S.W.A.T. team members were forced to use a ram and flash bangs to make their way into the home.

Black was found passed out inside when officers took him into custody.

Black has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

ORIGINAL: (04/03/19)  A man who barricaded himself inside a home has been taken into custody by Union County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m., deputies responded to an aggravated assault call at a trailer home in Strong. Thomas Black, one of the residents of the home, was threatening family members with a shotgun.

When a sheriff’s officer arrived on scene, he witnessed Black waving the gun and called for backup. The suspect then went inside the home and wouldn’t come out.

Deputies blocked off roadways around the area to ensure civilians were safe if action had to be taken. Sheriff Rick Roberts spoke to Black for an hour on the phone and tried to talk Black out of the home but he refused. Family members and friends were given the opportunity to speak to Black through a megaphone but he still refused to come out.

The SWAT team then surrounded the area around the trailer. Around 4:45 p.m., deputies used a ram and flash bangs to enter inside the home. When they arrived inside the residence, deputies found Black on the floor passed out. They arrested him and took him into custody.

“We could not ask for any better outcome,” Chief Deputy Charlie Phillips said. “He was safe. We were safe. We recovered the firearm that he was brandishing and we’re all going home safe.”

Black was carrying a 12 gauge shotgun. It is unclear Black’s mental capacity at the time. The Union County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the incident.
