Two unrestrained children under the age of 5 were injured in a two-vehicle wreck in Union Parish. The driver, John Daniel Auger, 28, of Marion, was charged with driving while impaired.

State Police reported that the children were not seriously injured when a small SUV turned from La. Hwy. 566 (Camp 5 Road) onto Magnolia Road striking a Toyota pickup head-on about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the Toyota, who was not identified in the arrest affidavit, was taken to Union General Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, the affidavit stated. The two children were also taken to the hospital by family members. State Police said their injuries were not life threatening.

Auger told the investigating trooper that he was arguing with the children and was looking backwards at them when the wreck occurred.

The trooper reported that Auger’s breath smelled of burned marijuana. He also was unsteady on his feet, had increased vital signs, body tremors, swaying and incoherent speech.

Auger was booked into the Union Parish Detention Center on charges of operating a vehicle while under the influence (third offense), vehicular negligent injuring, careless operation, two counts no children restraints, no seat belt and simple possession of marijuana in the presence of minors. His total bond was set at $80,500.

State Police reported that Auger admitted to taking a prescription drug the night before and smoking some marijuana. He also admitted that a brown cigar with suspected marijuana found on the ground next to his vehicle belonged to him.

A criminal background check on Auger revealed two other DWIs and another marijuana charge. He told the trooper he also was on probation in Ouachita Parish for domestic abuse.
