Three El Dorado, Ark., residents were arrested Sunday evening accused of burglarizing the old Spearsville High School.
Union Parish sheriff’s deputies and a Bernice police officer responded to a complaint that a burglary could be in progress at the school.
When the deputies arrived, the Bernice officer went to the back of the building and the deputies went to the front door which they found locked. Sheriff Dusty Gates said as the deputies started toward one end of the building they spotted a male and female leaving the building with items in their hands.
The deputies, with their weapons drawn, ordered the two on the ground and to keep their hands in sight. As one deputy stayed with the first two, the other two officers continued searching the old high school building and did not find the third suspect. The first two had said there was a third person with them.
The two officers then continued their search of the elementary and cafeteria buildings which are connected. Fresh footprints were seen leading out of the cafeteria where a vehicle was spotted. The third suspect was found in the backseat of the car and arrested.
The first two arrested were identified as Jacy Smith, 21, of 1619 W. Main St., and Benjamin Reagh Summerville, 17, of 1110 West Main St. They were both booked on charges of simple burglary and criminal trespass. Their bonds were set at $9,500.
The third suspect was identified as Christian Odell Tyler, 17, of 1110 W. Main St. He was booked on charges of simple burglary, criminal trespass, resisting an officer and possession of marijuana (less than 14 grams). His total bond was $11,700.
The resisting charge stemmed from Tyler moving his handcuffed hands from behind his back to his front and having to be handcuffed again. After arriving at the Union Parish Detention Center, a small amount of marijuana was found inside a Swisher Sweet cigar pack in the unit in which Tyler was riding.
