The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested 24-year-old Zackery Deville for stabbing the Turkey Creek police chief in the face.
Deville is being held at the Evangeline Parish Jail without bond.
The assault happened on Tuesday evening when Chief Robert Leggett was trying to arrest Deville for criminal trespassing.
During a physical altercation between the officer and the suspect, Deville pulled a knife and stabbed Leggett in the cheek, authorities said.
Leggett was flown by AirMed to Rapides Medical Center. The police chief was stable at time of arrival and later underwent an emergency surgery. He remains in the intensive care unit this afternoon.
Deville has been charged with attempted first degree murder and criminal trespassing.
