(10/4/18) Secretary of Education Betsy Devos spent the afternoon touring Holmes County Central High School sitting in on a classroom physics presentation.
School leaders along with representatives from the Global Teaching Project presented their blended learning initiative to the Secretary.
The program combines online learning with teachers outside of the state along with hands-on material in the classroom.
Devos says this high school is an example of ‘thinking outside the box’ amid teacher shortages. She added, Mississippi has to create solutions for their educational problems beginning with the needs of students.
“For too many across our country today they’re in situations that simply aren’t working for them that aren’t a fit for them so the more that Mississippi embraces the notion that students and what is right for each of them comes first and make decisions based on that I think they’re going to come up with the right answer.”
Holmes County is the poorest county in the state. Teachers there say they are struggling with technology and a lack of supplies. Devos’s stop was part of the Education Department’s “Rethink School” tour.
