His father describes him as a young boy that’s full of life. However, Rob Owen shares that when his son Brecken was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, it was a tough pill to swallow.
“It’s literally the worst thing you can hear as a parent. It’s one of those things, it wasn’t even on our radar, and all of a sudden they give you this news that just hits you like a ton of bricks,” he said.
Brecken Owens is now in Memphis at St. Jude Research Hospital undergoing treatment.
So for two days back home, the City of Ruston is banning together to “Eat Local.”
“I think it’s a testament to the city of Ruston and the surrounding community. I think it’s awesome that they kind of got behind this,” said Owens.
Participating restaurants, such as Beau Vines, will be donating portions of their proceeds to St. Jude in Brecken’s honor.
“If they weren’t going to eat out at any point during the week, tomorrow or Tuesday, whether you’re going to get a smoothie or whether you’re driving through Chic-fil-A or coming to sit down and eat with us, it’s all going to a great cause,” said part owner of Beau Vines Alex Eddy.
Owens shares that Brecken is responding well to his treatment and they will get through this as a family. “It’s a marathon not a sprint so we’re just going to hang in there, try to treat these next two years two and a half years as normal as we can,” he said.
