OAK GROVE, La. – (5/2/19) After an undercover investigation, an Oak Grove man faces four counts after attempting to solicit sex with minors.
On March 16, 2019, investigators with Oak Grove Police Department received a complainant from a professional watch group in reference to a local individual soliciting sex with a minor. Investigators remained in contact with the complainant and opened an investigation into the matter. The complainant provided a photo to investigators and the subject was able to be identified as Colby Barnes of Oak Grove.
OGPD Investigators consulted with the 5th District Attorney’s Office about the case because of some legal concerns with the original complaint.
Investigators created a profile of a young girl and Barnes soon began a conversation with this profile.
On April 23, 2019, investigators were able to begin undercover communications with Barnes. Barnes believed that he was communicating with two 11-year-old children. Barnes sent multiple sexually explicit messages related to acts he would perform on the “children”. Barnes also sent the officer images of himself in sexually explicit poses.
Police said Barnes would set up a location to meet with the “children” on April 26, 2019. Investigators conducted an undercover operation at the location that Barnes provided. Barnes arrived at the location and marked the doorway for the “children” to know where to go. Investigators exited the area and attempted to make contact with Barnes. Barnes attempted to flee on foot.
After a brief foot chase with Barnes, officers were able to take him into custody.
Barnes was searched and his cellphone was recovered. A search warrant was conducted on Barnes’ residence in Oak Grove. Communications with the “children” were recovered from Barnes’s phone as well as sexually explicit material.
Barnes was transported to West Carroll Parish Jail.
Barnes was interviewed by investigators in reference to the communications with the two children. Barnes admitted to investigators that he had intended on having sex with both “children” at the meeting location and that he believed the “children” were 10 years old. Barnes gave a complete confession to the crimes for which he was charged.
Barnes was charged with two counts of Computer-aided Solicitation of a Minor Under 13 years old, two counts of Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile Under 13 years old and Resisting an Officer by Flight.
Barnes is currently being held at West Carroll Parish Jail with a $44,500 bond.
Chief Russell would like to thank the 5th District Attorney’s Office for investigative guidance and the West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office for assistance during the arrest and execution of the search warrant. Chief Russell would also like to commend the officers and investigators of OGPD for the hard work in this investigation and subsequent arrest.
