MONROE, La. – (5/22/19) A Monroe man faces arson charges after setting his girlfriend’s bed and home on fire.

The Monroe Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire on Desiard Street on May 21st at 11:37 a.m. MFD Investigators later determined the fire to be arson. The total estimated damages to the home were $20,000.

MFD crew said they witnessed a male wearing a blue shirt and camouflage shorts leave the mobile home when they arrived. Investigators were able to view video evidence and positively identify the suspect as 36-year-old Rashai M. Gilbert of Monroe.

Later Tuesday night the victim contacted MFD when Gilbert returned to the home. MPD was called by the fire department to the home.

Gilbert admitted to officers that he set the bed on fire because he was upset. The victim told police the reason Gilbert started the fire in her house was because he was angry she moved a box containing his drugs.

Police searched the box and found 29 grams of methamphetamines, 68 bars of Xanax, two 50mg of Vyvanse, two 50mg of Amphetamines/Dextro tablets and 144 ecstasy tablets.

The victim also told police Gilbert showed up at her friend’s home without an invitation and pulled her outside before placing his hands around her throat.

Gilbert was transported to OCC.

At OCC Gilbert admitted to going to the home but denied putting his hands on her.

Gilbert was charged with Simple Arson, Distribution Possession with intent manufacture of CDS 1 narcotic, Prescriptions, Possession with intent/distribute/manufacture of CDS-II, Domestic Abuse Battery; Strangulation and Home Invasion.
