MONROE, La. — (4/6/19) A Monroe man was arrested for attempting to steal $500 worth of items at a local grocery store.

On Wednesday, officers were dispatched to Family Stop Foods at 1403 Orange Street as a local man attempted to steal $500 worth of merchandise from the store with a trash can.

The man, later identified as 41-year-old Demetrius Potter, refused to leave when the store clerk told him to leave the property. The tasers failed to have any effect on Potter. He hit one officer in the face and $200 worth of store items were damaged during the struggle.

Potter was transported to the hospital where he tested positive for PCP.

He was then transported to OCC.

He was charged with Simple Criminal Damage to Property less than $500, three counts of Battery of a Police Officer, Disturbing the Peace, Resisting a Police Officer with Force or Violence, Criminal Trespass, Shoplifting – Felony (Taking of $500 but less than $1,500) and POSS CDS-1 1st Offense.

His bond was set at $85,150.
