(4/10/19) West Monroe Police have arrested a man after they say he stole about $20,000 worth of jewelry from a local jewelry store and fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.
Marcus Williams, 34 of Monroe, was arrested Tuesday around 6:00 p.m.
According to the arrest report, West Monroe officers responded to a call about a theft at Showcase Jewelry on Cypress Street.
The suspect’s vehicle was a black GMC Sierra truck. Officers were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle and found the vehicle was stolen out of Monroe prior to this date. Officers located Williams hiding in an exterior storage room several houses away from the abandoned vehicle.
Williams fled the scene on foot, but officers were able to capture him after a short pursuit.
Once officers placed Williams in a police unit, he moved his hands from behind him to in front of him and tried to open the rear door, but was unsuccessful.
Officers spoke with the victim, who was also the owner of the jewelry store. The victim said she was waiting on Williams and showing him multiple rings. When the victim turned her back, Williams reached inside the jewelry case and removed a tray of diamond rings valued at about $20,000.00.
The victim chased the suspect out of the store. Williams signed a rights waiver form and agreed to speak with officers about the case.
Williams would not admit to the theft or to being in possession of the stolen vehicle, but he did advise the last time “he saw the stolen rings” was on top of the washing machine in the exterior storage closet where he was found hiding.
Officers took Williams back to the jewelry store and the victim was able to identify him as the theft suspect.
Williams has been booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on a $25,500.00 bond.
