OPSO: 80-year-old man disarms home invader yielding a claw hammer before deputies arrived

COLUMBIA, La. — (5/4/19) An 80-year-old man was able to disarm a home invader yielding a claw hammer before OPSO deputies arrived.

Deputies responded to a home invasion on Henry Martin Road in Columbia on Friday night.

Deputies saw the front door was shattered before meeting the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old George Sant Jr., in the kitchen. When confronted by deputies, Sant jumped onto a countertop and swung his fists at them. 

The 80-year-old victim told authorities that Sant made him stay in a bedroom and had committed battery on him but was able to disarm the suspect’s weapon, a claw hammer.

Sant was transported to OCC and charged with Cruelty to the Infirmed, Battery of a Police Officer, Resisting an Officer, Simple Criminal Damage to Property and Home Invasion.
