(8/9/18) If you saw a large amount of police officers, fire trucks, and other first responders around East Ouachita Middle School today, don’t worry. It was just an exercise.

Keeping our schools safe means training the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ouachita Parish Fire, and Louisiana State Police joined the Ouachita Parish School Board at East Ouachita Middle School Thursday morning for a simulation drill.

Sheriff Jay Russell says around 75 officers participated as well as a few teachers.
The purpose of the drill is all to know how to protect your child if there is ever a situation involving shooting threats.

“It was done so that our teachers would know what to expect once something like this were to happen. And heaven forbid anything like this ever happens. But it gives us a much better idea of how we can respond to something like this,” Dr. Don Coker, Ouachita Parish Schools Superintendent.

The drill drew more than 300 volunteers.
