New Medical Marijuana law expands list of conditions covered

WEST MONROE, La - 111 McMillan Road in West Monroe is the future site of Del Mar Meds, a soon to be dispensary for medical marijuana.

A new Louisiana bill just added several new conditions that qualify for treatment.

Those including chronic pain and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Many vets walk into the West Monroe Veterans Affairs office suffering from PTSD, looking for a safe and legal alternative to opioids.

One such veteran is 43-year old Kenneth Mitchell, a 14-year vet who served in Afghanistan and Iraq after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

Mitchell says, "When I smell carbon, it takes me back to when I was shooting my gun. Then all the memories come back and you are constantly living in a nightmare you can't wake-up from."

Paul Fontenot is a Vietnam vet and counsels veterans dealing with the horrors of war.

He says offering Medical Marijuana as a tool is music to his ears.

Fontenot says, "Anything that lowers your anxiety level, treats depression, treats all symptoms of ptsd, I think it's great! I think that after all the vets do for their country, helping them recover from pain is the least we can do."
