Morehouse Parish residents react to severe flooding

MOREHOUSE PARISH (2/25/19) – Water flooded the streets of Morehouse Parish after the bayou overflowed over the weekend. Both animals and people were displaced.

Resident Kelly Whitlock had to break the news to a friend her house was flooded, again.

“Hey your house is flooding and she just cried and cried because they just remodeled everything”, said Whitlock.

Her friend had to remodel after her home was severely damaged following the floods of 2016.

Today, rapid moving water closed several roads and schools in the area.

Gary Del Rio has lived in his house on Old Bonita Rd for 26 years. For over 20, he never had a flood.

“And now in 3 years it’s got me one time and scared me half to death this time. I was having flashbacks”, said Del Rio.

He lost everything during the floods of 2016, and he wasn’t going to take a chance this time. He already had his valuables propped up so nothing was touching the floor.

“I’m 61-years-old and disabled. I didn’t want to have to go through that again”, said Del Rio.

He said he had to be rescued via a bass boat from his house that time, and he’s thankful he didn’t have to completely relive those memories.

His neighbor, one of the people who rescued him a few years ago, agreed.

“It’s devastating to see your neighbors go under and here you are helpless”, said Becky Wilkerson

Del Rio is grateful for the help from his neighbors, and from law enforcement. A Morehouse Parish sheriff’s deputy parked out front his house makes him feel even better. Del Rio said last year kids goofing off in dangerous conditions caused even more damage to his home.

“They were throwing the waves up so big they busted the front windows out my house”, said Del Rio.

For now the biggest inconvience for Del Rio and many residents are the road closures.

“I had to go all the way back to town and all the way back around to come in from the other side because of flood waters”, said Del Rio.

Deputies are writing tickets for anyone they catch going around barricades.
