A man is in critical condition after attempting to rescue his co-worker in Monroe today.

Two local contract workers collapsed in a manhole on the corner of Dick Taylor and Nichols.

Chief Terry Williams from the Monroe Fire Department says one was working in the man hole to unblock a section of the sewer line.

He became overwhelmed with gases and suddenly collapsed.

Officials say the other dove into the manhole to help, but he also collapsed from the gases.

Chief Terry Williams says the manhole had different gases which caused the men to collapse.

The first man was transported to St. Francis for medical attention.

The second man was airlifted to Shreveport in critical condition.

Their identities have not yet been released.
