The Monroe City Council is lending a helping hand to local homeless shelters, by donating more than $100,000 in grants.

The Christopher Youth Center received a $100,000 grant from the city. This organization offers homeless children a place to live.

The Wellspring Alliance for Families received a $50,000 grant that will go towards a special program to help homeless adults.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo said he’s excited to be able to help the community.

“They need all the help they can get,” Mayor Mayo said. “They need the support they can get so any time the city of Monroe can help them we really appreciate to have that opportunity and these grants will afford them the opportunity to get them the support or some of the support they need.”

The money will be used to help fund programs that help give food, shelter and clothing to those who need it.

He said although the city has supported the cause for many years, the grants are very competitive and are not guaranteed.

The grants have to be approved by the city council every year.
