Police say a 39-year-old man could face a total of four charges related to inappropriate sexual activity with children in Louisiana and Mississippi.
The Vidalia Police Department says a victim came forward and told them a man named Michael Bumgardner raped her in 2004 when she was only 15 years old.
Assistant Chief Bruce Wiley with the Vidalia Police Department says, “We can’t fix something, if we dont know it happened, but when they do come forward, we put every effort we can into solving those cases to give these people resolution.”
During the investigation, police say two more victims came forward and accused Bumgardner of also sexually abusing them.
Police say one those incidents happened in 2005, when the victim was 9-years-old. They say the other incident happened in 2009, when the victim was 14-years-old.
Wiley says, “We are putting all of our efforts into getting this investigation solved and getting these people justice.”
Police say Louisiana does not have a statue of limitations on those crimes.
According to police reports, Bumgardner was arrested in Vidalia on March 16th on two counts of 3rd degree rape of a minor and one count of sexual battery of a minor.
“The investigation is ongoing so we may find more victims,” says Wiley.
One of those other victims could be in Mississippi.
On Thursday, Bumgardner was arrested there on a charge of felony child molestation. Arrest reports state a mother came to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office after her daughter told her Bumgardner had inappropriate contact with her on more than one occasion.
Currently, the Vidalia Police Department says they are not working with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office on this case, but that could change as the investigation continues.
