(4/1019) It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week.
Louisiana DOTD, State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, and the Federal Highway Administration held a news conference to urge drivers to slow down while driving through highway work zones.
The theme for this year’s campaign is “work zone safety: drive like you work here.”
DOTD assembled a safety cone memorial on the steps of the capitol in memory of the Louisiana workers killed in work zone crashes and unveiled a memorial to the latest DOTD employee who has killed.
“Drive like you work here. For the men and women in this industry, the roadways and highways are their offices. Everyday when they go into work they are putting themselves at potential dangerous situation by working on an active roadway,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson.
799 people died in work zone crashes nationwide with 11 being in Louisiana.
