Jury duty scam circulating in Ouachita Parish

Local News

(4/4/19) The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) is currently investigating a phone scam that is circulating among parish residents.

The caller is telling residents they have missed jury duty and owe a fine, usually in the amount of $2000, but the amount may vary. The phone number on the Caller ID will read 318-329-1200, which is the OPSO’s main number, but the ID is false.

The caller then instructs the person that while they can come to the courthouse, they can avoid being arrested if they go purchase a Green Dot/Western Union Money Order and wire the fine per instructions they will be given.

THIS IS A SCAM. This scam is similar to previous ones where the caller advises the person to go buy a Green Dot cash card to pay a fine for missed Federal Court, IRS penalties, utility charges and other scams. The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office does not, nor does any other public agency, contact residents by phone and advise them to pay fines using a cash card to avoid penalty or arrest.
