(09/05/18) Death is something we all must face, but all agree that the sudden death of Mayor Paxton Branch of Tallulah was much too soon.
Saturday morning Mayor Branch passed away after complications of heart surgery. Golden Guy says he had just spoken with the mayor a few days ago. Guy remembers Mayor Branch as a kind spirited man who would do anything for anyone.
“Often he was misunderstood, he was a man who had a vision and he had a passion for Tallulah,” he said.
Guy indicates that Mayor Branch faced a lot of unnecessary struggles while in office, but he’s happy he’s free from life’s burdens.
“He was under a lot of stress and a lot of pressure but now he’s free now.”
Guy mourns the loss of his good friend Mayor Branch and he says Tallulah will never be the same, but as a city it’s time to push forward.
“It’s a void in the city now, you can feel it, it’s an emptiness in the city.”
Former council member Gloria Hayden had been a very vocal opponent of the mayor in and his plans for the city of Tallulah. In his passing she offered this statement that reads in part:
“The city of Tallulah is grieving and my heart goes out to the Branch family and the people of Tallulah. The disagreements between Mayor Branch and I were never personal. The only concern was the mismanagement of funds and the water conditions. Mayor Branch’s death hits close to home because I lost my son, Mayor Branch’s former classmate, to a massive heart attack years ago. Let’s just take this time to allow Mayor Branch to Rest In Peace and the city of Tallulah to grieve in peace and move forward.”
Guy says the only way the city of Tallulah can properly move forward is to lean on one another.
A special election for the next mayor of Tallulah won’t come until 2019. Mayor Branch’s memorial service will be held Friday and his funeral will be Saturday at the First Baptist Church.
