UPDATE: MONROE, La. (KTVE/KARD) — The Monroe Police Department has issued a statement regarding the attack of two guards and the escape of six inmates at the Swanson Correctional Center.

According to MPD, officers responded to the facility around 11 PM on Sunday night after receiving calls about a disturbance.

Responding officers learned that two guards were attacked during the incident and that inmates took over a control center, which allowed the other inmates to “roam freely.”

Deputies with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office helped MPD take control of the situation and were able to secure the inmates. One guard was injured during the incident and needed medical attention.

Just eight hours later, Monroe Police were called back out to the facility after six inmates escaped. Again with the help of Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, MPD was able to capture all six inmates.
