Gov. Edwards expected to declare emergency as river rises

(2/26/19) According to our partners at The News-Star, Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to declare a state of emergency today as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares to open Bonnet Carre Spillway Wednesday to protect New Orleans from the rising Mighty Mississippi River.

Edwards’ staff confirmed the likely declaration, which will free resources where needed in a flood fight.

Opening the spillway will move water from the river and divert it to Lake Pontchartrain, keeping the maximum river level at 17 feet in New Orleans, which is flood stage.
