Connie Toepel is rocking to the beat of her own drum.
Their drums are little different, take a pair of sticks and a ball, and you have “drums alive.”
It’s a class offered by Healthworks Fitness Center, keeping seniors active.
Connie’s story is a little different.
She got here after a move to El Dorado because of her husband’s job.
“I was miserable,” she said. “I found Healthworks. I started coming to this class and tai chi, and it literally changed my life.”
It made such an impact that she’s come to the other side of the ball to be an instructor.
“I made friends, “I started feeling better, and I have a background in music. I’m a violinist, so it was just kind of a natural class for me, and the more I did it, the more I enjoyed it.”
Studies show that not only does it make you happy, but it also makes you healthy.
Following the beat can improve your health, including posture and body alignment, “brain fitness” and overall well-being.
“They get to move, and it’s social, and you know they have a schedule, and it just gives them something in their day,” said Rhonda Sayers, Group Fitness Coordinator.
The beat still goes on, and Connie is making her own music and taking the steps to a healthier lifestyle.
Drum Alive classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. at HealthWorks Fitness Center.
