Family says pit bull helped save 7-year-old's life in vicious dog attack

GRAMBLING, La. - Bite marks covering his legs, arm and head.
Seven-year-old Howard Kirkpatrick, Jr. is fighting for his life.

Grambling Police said he was attacked by a pit bull Monday afternoon, but his father claims that is not the case.

"It was not a pit bull. It was a mastiff and she is a great big dog and I've never seen any aggression in her," said the victim's father Howard Kirkpatrick.

He said he was watching the mastiff for cousin, and when his son didn't respond to his call to come inside that's when he knew something was wrong.

"I looked for him and he was in the backyard by the fence and the mastiff had him," said Kirkpatrick.

Now he is calling Junior's pit bull ,Missy Bell, a hero after she came to the rescue.

"I thank the Lord for my dog, because she got the dog's attention and I was able to get Junior away from the dog and I brought him in the house," said Kirkpatrick.

As junior continues his road to recovery in Shreveport, his father's friends and co-workers at the Louisiana Family Medicine Clinic are coming together to organize a few fundraisers.

"Howard and his wife need to be with their son now, so we are doing everything we can to alleviate any worries that they have so they can give all their energy to their son," said Carla Roberts.

They say Kirkpatrick is a great father and it was never a second thought to lend a helping hand.

"We already raised $1,400 since yesterday and we couldn't have done without the support of the community," said Roberts.

Police say the dog was put down after the attack, and the owner was cited.
But, Kirkpatrick there are no hard feelings toward his cousin and the tragedy has only made his family stronger.

"It's just hard on everybody. It's no love lost to my family and I love my family to death he will do anything for junior," said Kirkpatrick

The Louisiana Family Medicine Clinic has set up two donation funds at the Jackson Parish Bank and the Barksdale Federal Credit Union. You can also click HERE to donate to a fundraiser on Facebook.
