An elderly couple from Highland passed away after their car was hit in the side by another car.

The accident happened Monday, July 31, around 4:45 p.m., on Highway 62/412 in Ash Flat.

The report says Phyllis Gatewood, 86, was driving while her husband, Nelson Gatewood, 93, was in the passenger seat of their 2015 Chrysler.

The Gatewoods were headed west on Highway 62/412 and attempting to make a left turn when a 2004 Chevrolet, driven by Ronnie Barnes, 58, of Walnut Ridge, heading east hit them in the passenger side.

According to the Spring River Chronicle, the couple was on their way to attend a special event honoring a man named Johnny Carter at a nearby Pizza Hut by Modern Woodman. The accident reportedly happened not far from that Pizza Hut.

The weather conditions were listed as dry and clear.

Barnes was reported injured and taken to UAMS Hospital.

Funeral arrangements for the Gatewoods are pending at Tri-County Funeral Home in Highland.
