Does it work: text alerts on college campuses

Local News

Nearly 30 years ago the Cleary Act was developed to help colleges alert students and faculty when crime occurs on campus.

Unfortunately there have been dozens of college related shootings since the Cleary Act was put in place.

With the most recent shooting last week at Grambling State University,  we took a look into how GSU is alerting their students about crime on campus.

Colleges in the Arklamiss like GSU, ULM, and Louisiana Tech all have text alert systems in place to get information out  in times of emergency.

We spoke with students at GSU about the text alert system on their campus just days after the recent shooting.

Student Marquez Piper says, “It’s good to know that I’ll be alerted of whatever happens at anytime through this system because without it, I heard previously that there were two other shootings I didn’t even know about.”

In reference to the dorm shooting last week, the victim has been released from the hospital and is recovering at his home in Franklin.

Howard Caviness, Chief of Police at Grambling State says they do have a suspect and are looking to make an arrest soon.
