Development projects in Monroe hit a roadblock

Local News

New restaurants and more jobs are coming to Monroe. That’s if they can get past a roadblock!

Panda Express is under construction and a new sushi restaurant called Wasabi will soon be opening its doors along the I-20 corridor.

But now the city is having trouble moving forward with other development projects because of land between Nutland Road and Lowe’s.

“All the property has already been acquired except this one piece we are attempting expropriate,” says City Attorney Angie Baldwin. “If, hopefully when the council approves this, the city will file the lawsuit for the expropriation and hopefully when the project is expropriated, the project can move forward and is completed.”

Mayor Jamie Mayo is also asking that the City Council will delay the opening of more used tire shops.

Tomorrow, the City Council will vote on a plan calling for a six month ban.

The mayor says it will help beautify Monroe and fix health and safety issues.
