(11/16/18) According to our partners at The News-Star, a conversation following Tuesday night’s meeting of the Monroe City Council led to a Monroe Police Department investigation into a perceived threat.
Councilman Michael Echols was approached by Wardell Coward, a member of the Southside Economic Development District board, as Echols was exiting the council chambers.
The conversation allegedly started with Coward asking Echols why he contacts the State Bond Commission to speak out against items. Echols said he told Coward he has not called any members of the State Bond Commission, even when he did oppose taxing measures proposed by SEDD, including a hotel occupancy tax that passed in 2017 and a sales tax proposal that was removed from a recent commission agenda.
The News-Star can confirm hearing Echols stating “the tax that I’m not for” due to the proximity of the conversation to the media table but no additional comments were heard.
