Camden hosts job fair, hopes to tackle county unemployment rate

(04/16/19) The unemployment rate in Ouachita County isn’t getting any better but the community stepped up to take matters into their own hands.

Ouachita Partnership for Economic Development, South Arkansas University Tech, The Department of Workforce Services and Camden Area Chamber of Commerce partnered together to host one of South Arkansas’ largest job fairs.

“It’s a lot of people that look for jobs and need one now,” Chekehl Reynolds said.

According to the Arkansas Department of Workforce, out of the 75 counties in the state, Ouachita County is ranked 67 in the unemployment rate rankings.

Reynolds was one of over 750 people that filled the student center at SAU Tech. There were 62 employers from various areas in Southeast Arkansas that met face to face with these job seekers and were ready to hire on the spot.

The community worked on the fair for weeks. There was even a community closet at a local church to give attendees an opportunity to dress for success.

“We’re already providing answers for it to try and make this as easy as possible to get everybody gainful employment,” Mayor Julian Lott said. “We need a good workforce and we’re trusting that this will help us to get there.”

Arkansas Department of Workforce brought their mobile bus unit to assist anyone with their resume. There were over 1200 jobs available, Aerojet Rocketdyne is trying to fill 130 positions.
