(11/28/18) Great news for boaters wanting to get back out onto the Ouachita river. Multiple ramps along the river are finally being reopened after being closed for months.
Since July ramps from near the Arkansas Border to near Columbia have been closed due to low water levels. The combination of low rainfall and river projects have lead the river to fall below the safe criteria for boats to enter and leave.
But heavy rains from this month have helped to bring the water above the minimum safe level for boats. This prompted the cities of West Monroe, Monroe and the U.S. Army Corps decided to reopen the ramps.
This opening is conditional, however. If the levels drop below 21 feet once again, all ramps will close immediately.
Due to rainfall in the forecast and high river levels upstream, the ramps are anticipated to be open for at least the next few weeks. Until then, happy boating!
