A Bastrop man has been arrested after a pursuit ended with him striking a patrol vehicle head on.

West Monroe police arrested Robert Sampson, 46, on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

According to the arrest report, West Monroe Police saw a 1997 Toyota Camry fail to use a left turn signal from Grape Street onto Montgomery Avenue.

Officers initiated a traffic stop near Coleman Avenue and S. 5th Street. The vehicle continued eastbound and ran the red light at s. 5th and Coleman. The vehicle continued until turning southbound onto S. 4th then eastbound onto Ludwig traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle ran 3 stop signs on Ludwig and turned on S. 2nd Street where he ran another stop sign.

Sampson then turned onto McClendon then southbound onto S. 5th driving through the grass next to the oncoming lane. Sampson then turned westbound onto Linderman and ran another stop sign at S. 10th. Sampson then turned east onto Coleman traveling in the left oncoming lane towards 2 police units. The 1st police unit swerved around the vehicle, and the vehicle then struck the 2nd unit head on in the oncoming lane.

Officers saw Sampson exit the driver door and run northbound. After a short foot pursuit, officers deployed a taser on Sampson, but he continued to resist orders to place his hands behind his back. Officers tased Sampson in the middle of his back and placed him under arrest.

Sampson said he ran because he has warrants.
A warrant check revealed he didn’t have any active warrants in the surrounding area.

He was transported to the hospital for his injuries and then booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on one count of aggravated flight from an officer, one count aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a police officer, one count careless operation, one count traffic-control signals, six counts stop signs and yield signs, one count turning movements and required signals, and one count resisting an officer.

His bond has been set at $7,950.00.
