Three people are dead and several more injured after an explosion at a packaging plant in Beauregard Parish.

Chief Deputy Joe Toler, of the parish sheriff’s office, says they were notified about 11:10 a.m. Wednesday about a blast at the Packaging Corporation of America facility and sent several units to investigate.

Toler says two tanks at the plant exploded. It was unknown what the tanks contained.

Toler says at least one person remains unaccounted for and several more are injured. Ambulances are on the scene and Louisiana State Police is sending a hazardous materials team to the facility.

Toler says the area has been contained and there is no fire.

The Lake Forest-Illinois-based PCA acquired the old Boise paper mill in 2013. The plant is located on U.S. 190.
