October is domestic violence awareness month and one local group hosted the annual “Hope in the Light of Day” event to bring awareness.
Louisiana ranks 3rd in the nation for female homicides committed by men and groups in the state are working hard to bring awareness to the issue.
Monroe residents came out to the River Market wearing purple to hear from survivors, officials, and pastors.
The Wellspring hosted the event in order to bring awareness to domestic abuse victims and to offer information on where they can get help.
And Jeslyn Lewis is extremely excited about the turnout.
“Oh my gosh. We are just so pleased that we had a crowd to come out, so that we can talk about those issues with domestic violence that people don’t realize every day.”
Survivors are hoping their personal domestic violence stories will help bring awareness to where people can get help.
The Wellness is open for walk-in appointments and will keep identities anonymous.
The Wellspring serves as the lead agency for the Family Justice Center (FJC) of Ouachita Parish. The FJC is a one-stop center for victims of domestic violence. They can go to the FJC and receive medical care, help from local law enforcement, legal aid, counseling and advocacy.
