LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KARK) – (4/22/19) Police were initially called to Shackleford Crossings around 2:45 p.m. for reports of a suspicious person in the area.

According to investigators an armed man and two officers were involved in a shootout at the Arby’s parking lot.

“At some point there was a gunfire exchange. The subject fired at the officers. At some point, our officers fired back striking the suspect,” explained Little Rock Police Chief Keith Humphrey.

Gunshots rattled shoppers at the plaza like Lisa Walker-Wheeler, who says her family was leaving Easter brunch at an adjacent restaurant when bullets started flying.

“We saw the police racing through and we heard repetitions of gunfire, boom boom boom boom boom, and we took cover,” Walker-Wheeler said, “We were just all  getting together to try to enjoy family time. I never imagined my son would have to grab me trying to protect me.”

Police spent much of the day dispelling rumors spreading on social media.

“Unfortunately there was a white male that was shot by two of our officers, both of those officers are white,” explained Lt. Michael Ford.

Police have not released the name or age of the man killed.

The department plans to release the names and pictures of the officers involved by Tuesday.
