“Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate substandard housing.”
Habitat for Humanity is offering applications for new homes in Ouachita Parish.
Applicants who do qualify for housing can apply for the new build program through Habitat for Humanity and it is not very difficult to do.
“People do not need to be scared or nervous about the process through Habitat because they really sit down with you and really go over each process step by step,” according to recent recipient Chondrika Williams.
Houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. Mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat homes.
Applicants will have to help with the construction of the house from the foundation up and have the chance to personalize something of theirs.
“You’re paying monthly notes for apartments. You could be putting that towards your own house and that’s one good things I like. I want to have something to call my own,” says Chondrika Williams. In fact, her and her daughters have painted their rooms with their favorite colors and are excited for future projects.
The qualifications for applying to the new build program include:
1) A need for housing – Applicants are currently dealing with inadequate housing, you cannot afford rent, or you may be living in a home that is inaccessible for any disabilities.
2) A willingness to partner – Homebuyers help build their own home.
3) The ability to pay an affordable mortgage – Habitat offers affordable monthly payments (mortgage). These payments are then cycled back into the community to build more affordable homes.
According to Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Ouachita Parish, Seth Pryor, it is seeing the reaction from families that make it worth the whole process. “It is so much fun to be on the professional side of things and the one things, you know, when you meet a kid of family that has never had a bedroom or a bed? You get to see that look for the first time like ‘Hey. This is your home.'”
