A Louisiana court clerk steals $362K, sentenced 30 months

News

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) — A former Louisiana court clerk was sentenced to 30 months in jail for stealing about $362,000 in advance court deposit funds.

The Daily Iberian reports Michael Thibodeaux was sentenced Tuesday.

Judge Lewis Pitman also required Thibodeaux to pay a $5,000 fine and restitution costs of no more than $50,000.

Thibodeaux was found guilty in May of stealing, giving false testimony and filing false public records while he served as Iberia Parish Clerk of Court.

The district attorney’s office was disappointed.

Prosecutors requested a 15-year sentence with all but seven years suspended and $200,000 fine with no restitution cap.

Thibodeaux’s attorney said the sentencing was fair.

KATC-TV says the parish started refunding money to litigants last month.
