NEW ORLEANS, La. (KTAL) – (6/6/19) A Louisiana man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the burning death of a fellow homeless man who was set on fire behind a shuttered New Orleans grocery store.

News outlets report 53-year-old David Klein was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2018 death of 28-year-old Henry Dunaway. His plea was part of a deal that averted a murder trial set to start this month.

Authorities have not said what motivated the slaying. They say Klein told authorities that he placed a cardboard box over Dunaway, who was sleeping behind the abandoned store. Surveillance video shows Klein fleeing the area as flames start to cover the box.

Authorities arrested Klein after witnesses identified him as the only person seen near Dunaway before the fire.
