JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (KTAL) – (4/22/19) A Jefferson Parish man faces a hate crime charge after he allegedly tried to run over an interracial couple, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
James Descant was arrested Wednesday, the day after the incident in a convenience store parking lot in Metairie.
Prosecutors say Descant accelerated his truck toward the couple, a black man and a white woman. The man was able to get out of the way, but the women as hit and suffered hip, wrist, and foot injuries.
Police say Descant was upset about the couple’s interracial relationship. The victims said they had a previous interaction with the suspect at a local motel in the past week.
Descant is charged with aggravated second-degree battery, aggravated assault, damaging property and hate crimes, records show. He is being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
